C1-- 0 to 10 inches; white (5Y 8/1) sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 5.2 Chlorophenol red; clear smooth boundary. 5 1mm horizontal bands of dark material at various distances apart; a 1cm horizontal band of dark mineral material (manganese or magnatite) separates C1 from C2 - below band is a thin 2 cm band of very fine gravelly coarse sand; colors are dominant colors of individual sand grains, dominant sand grains are quartz minerology w/minor amounts of dark mineral; 1-2% fine shell fragments (white) in C1 and C2 horizons, no shell flag fragments found in lower horizons. C2--10 to 30 inches; light gray (5Y 7/1) sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 6.0 Bromthymol blue; 2 percent rounded mixed gravel and 5 percent rounded mixed cobbles; clear smooth boundary. C2 horizon is slightly darker in color - mainly due to moisture content (dry colors are identical); colors are dominant colors of individual sand grains, dominant sand grains are quartz minerology w/minor amounts of dark mineral; 1-2% fine shell fragments (white) in C1 & C2 horizons; no shell frag. found in lower horizons. C3--30 to 43 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) coarse sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 7.2 Bromthymol blue; 5 percent subrounded cobbles and 5 percent rounded cobbles; clear smooth boundary. 2 cm horizontal bands of gravelly COS material in C3; 1st band is at a depth of 75-77 cm, 2nd band is at a depth of 93-95 cm, both 15-20% fine gravel (mixed minerology); colors are dominant colors of individual sand grains; dominant sand grains are quartz minerology w/minor amounts of dark mineral; C3 moist at 90 cm. C4--43 to 47 inches; grayish brown (2.5Y 5/2) gravelly sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 7.2 Bromthymol blue; 10 percent subrounded cobbles and 15 percent rounded gravel; clear smooth boundary. Colors are dominant colors of individual sand grains; dominant sand grains are quartz minerology w/minor amounts of dark mineral; C4 horizon coarse frag., dark coarse gravel is well rounded granite, fragments are sub-rounded, cobbles are 4-6" in diameter, mainly sub-rounded granite. C5--47 to 52 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 7.2 Bromthymol blue; 7 percent subrounded gravel; clear smooth boundary. Colors are dominant colors of individual sand grains; dominant sand grains are quartz minerology w/minor amounts of dark material. C6--52 to 68 inches; light brownish gray (2.5Y 6/2) sand; single grain; loose, nonsticky and nonplastic; 7.2 Bromthymol blue; 1 percent subrounded gravel. |
