New England Soil Profiles

Scio Series

Photo by Rob Tunstead, photo location - Bridgewater Mass. State Farm.

Scio soils are moderately well drained soils formed in silty glacial lacustrine deposits. This profile (left) has a silt-loam Ap horizon, a silt-loam Bw horizon, and a series of silt-loam C layers with many redox concentrations which correlate with the depth to water table (EASHWT). Photo to right is a close-up of the redox features of the C layers, a vertical desiccation crack (gray surrounded by bright colors) is shown in the center of the photo.
